Salvesen Mindroom Centre is the leading Scottish charity in the field of neurodiversity. We have more than 20 years’ experience of supporting neurodivergent children and young people to access education and thrive. Through support and advocacy to children, and their parents and carers, we make a material difference to the education experience of vulnerable learners. Our services are free and by self-referral. We do not require a diagnosis. We have success in working with students who are absent from school due to anxiety, and we have a transitions support service for pupils who are due to leave school, helping them to plan the next steps to adulthood. We support families and schools to mend failing school placements. Our support to education professionals includes advice, training and a professional guide to neurodiversity and inclusion written for GTCS. Our partners at the University of Edinburgh, Salvesen Mindroom Research Centre, have led on the creation of LEANS – learning about neurodiversity at school. This is a free curriculum for mainstream primary schools to introduce pupils aged 8-11 years to the concept of neurodiversity, and how it impacts our experiences at school. The resource was co-created with a neurodiverse research team and has been piloted and evaluated prior to launch in June 2022. It will be showcased in a Keynote talk on 22nd September.
